Black holes may precede galaxies, astronomers say (Reuters)

The ring of stars circling Sagittarius A*, the Milky Way's central black hole, shows a combination of infrared and X-ray observations indicating that a surplus of massive stars has formed from a large disk of gas around the black hole in this artist's concept released October 13, 2005. (NASA/CXC/M. Weiss/Reuters)Reuters - Black holes -- those massive, invisible objects that suck in everything around them -- may have appeared before the galaxies that host them, astronomers said on Wednesday.

Study: Black holes seem to form before galaxies (AP)

AP - When galaxies initially formed, they weren't the first in the cosmic neighborhood. The supermassive black holes, which reside at the center of galaxies, probably moved in first, a new astronomy study suggests.

Strange dark energy acts as galactic diet enforcer (AP)

This August 2008 image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory show a clear separation between dark and ordinary matter during a clash 5.7 billion light years from Earth. Mysterious AP - Mysterious dark energy, which likely causes the universe to keep expanding, seems to have another effect: It prevents the biggest clusters of galaxies from getting too fat. Astronomers used X-rays to study the formation of galactic clusters billions of years ago. Their research supports the hard-to-fathom concept of dark energy as a potent force that governs the growth of the universe.

Mars find suggests area may have been hospitable (AP)

In this image provided by NASA the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter detected carbonate mineral in rock outcrops in Nili Fossae on Mars, a region of valleys that have cut into the planet's ancient crust, suggesting the area was not as harsh as other places on Mars scientists reported Thursday Dec. 18, 2008. Carbonate, which is indicative of a wet and non-acidic history, occurs in very small patches of exposed rock appearing green in this color representation, such as near the lower right corner. The uppermost capping rock unit (purple) is underlain successively by banded olivine-bearing rocks (yellow) and rocks bearing iron-magnesium smectite clay (blue). Where the olivine is a greenish hue, it has been partially altered by interaction with water. (AP Photo/NASA)AP - An orbiting spacecraft has discovered a key mineral in bedrock on the Martian surface that suggests the planet might once have had an environment hospitable to life, scientists reported Thursday.
