12 deaths blamed on snow and cold across Europe (AP)

An Italian forensic police officer and a firefighter inspect a balcony next to snow-covered roofs where a 46 year-old man was crushed to death when a canopy covered in snow collapsed in downtown Milan, Italy, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009. Subfreezing temperatures and exceptional snowfall caused travel woes around Europe on Wednesday. Milan's Malpensa and Linate airports briefly closed, then struggled to overcome a morning of delays and cancellations when the facilities reopened in the early afternoon as the city, Italy's financial capital, dug out from a foot (30 centimeters) of snow. Snow that blanketed much of northwestern Italy caused train delays of up to two hours as the Italian railway had to slow track speeds. Schools closed in many cities. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno)AP - Freezing temperatures and exceptional snowfall caused travel delays Wednesday across Europe and were blamed for at least 12 deaths, including that of a man in Milan who was crushed when a canopy collapsed under the weight of snow.

How big Jurassic flying reptiles got off ground (AP)

This undated handout illustration provided by The Johns Hopkins University shows the massive 30-foot wingspan of the toothless pteranodon, left, was surpassed by that of Hatzegopteryx, right, at 40 feet or more. Pterosaurs, sometimes weighed more than 500 pounds, and yet they soared above the other dinosaurs. Experts couldn't figure out how because no bird can get that big could get off the ground. A new study has figured out how they did it: By leaping into the air from all fours - unlike any other flyers in history (except the vampire bats). (AP Photo/Johns Hopkins University, Mark Witton)AP - The Jurassic version of jumbo jets — huge flying creatures weighing hundreds of pounds — is a mystery of dinosaur-era flight: How did something so big get off the ground? A Johns Hopkins University biologist thinks he has figured out the answer.
